Abstract

Feed is a very important component in cattle farming. Currently, animal feed is increasingly difficult to obtain, especially for dry season which usually occurs from January to August. The animal feed needed is usually in the form of rice bran, rejected corn, coconut cake or oil palm. However, this feed is difficult to obtain, especially in areas that are limited in corn, rice and oil palm production. Literature review shows that feed problems can be overcome by adding economical forage feeds, such as leaves, straw and elephant grass or other agricultural wastes. The forage feed needs to be chopped first before being given to cows so that it is easy to consume. So far, the feed count is done manually, so it is difficult to achieve the expected feed requirement target. One solution to overcome the above problems is to use a cattle feed chopper. Through this community service scheme, a cattle feed chopper was developed with a maximum capacity of 200 kg/hour. The implementation stages include: a) Designing complete machine components, b) Physical manufacture of machines, c) Functional testing of machines and machine performance and c) Implementation of machine use and training on machine use in partner businesses and providing management and marketing training to partners. This cattle feed chopper is expected to facilitate the community in the process of providing cattle feed, improve the quality of beef and ultimately increase the income of farmers.
