Abstract

This community service activity addressed the management of organic waste generated from coffee farming and processing in Aceh. The activity aimed to improve farmers’ knowledge and skills in converting organic waste into organic fertilizer and bioactivators, including effective microorganisms (EM) and local microorganisms (MOL). The activity was conducted at Buana Mandiri Cooperative, Pondok Baru, Bener Meriah Regency, in two stages: 29 - 30 January 2024 and 8 - 9 February 2025, involving 80 cooperative members. The methods consisted of face-to-face instruction, practical sessions on producing EM, MOL, and organic fertilizer, and knowledge evaluation using pre-tests and post-tests. The results showed a stronger improvement in the second stage, with the mean score increasing from 67 before training to 83 after training. In the first stage, the mean score decreased from 49 to 41; the project report indicates that incomplete participation in the pre-test and post-test affected the mean results. In practice, the training produced approximately 80 liters of EM and MOL, and about 1.2 tons of organic fertilizer material that was still undergoing composting. The activity demonstrates that a training approach combining explanation and hands-on practice can strengthen farmers’ capacity to utilize coffee waste. Future programs should include continuous mentoring, more consistent evaluation procedures, and product-quality testing to support sustained adoption at the farmer-group level.
