Abstract

Service has been carried out at the Chemistry Laboratory of FKIP Syiah Kuala University to make a prototype of a water filtration device using a refill cartridge filter using white sand as an adsorbent in various mesh sizes replacing the filter cartridge filter cartridge which is generally used by entrepreneurs of refillable drinking water depots. This devotion aims to test the ability of white sand as a natural adsorbent, to absorb iron and manganese ions. White sand samples were taken in Lhok mee Village, Krueng Raya, Aceh Besar. White sand contains silica ions and has porosity, expected to reduce iron and manganese ions. The preparation of white sand before use as an adsorbent is cleaned of impurities and sifted with a sieve of sizes of 8, 10 and 20 mesh and tested for contact time variations. The prototype of the water filtration device is equipped with three filter housings that can be filled with refill cartridge filters permanently placed in the FKIP USK chemical laboratory. Clean water filtered using white sand as a natural adsorbent was tested for iron and manganese ion levels using visible light specometry (UV-Vis), and compared with drinking water quality standards based on Permenkes RI number: 429 / MENKES / PER / IV / 2010. The test results of iron and manganese ions in clean water met the standard, with an adsorption efficiency of 89.07%. Based on experimental data, it can be concluded that the white sand of Lhok Mee Krueng Raya Aceh Besar can be used as a natural adsorbent to absorb iron and manganese ions.  The prototype of the purification tool developed is one of the clean water supply tools for practicum and research needs at the FKIP USK Chemistry Laboratory.
