Abstract

Agricultural waste biomass is widely available and can even be a source of pollution. Some of the waste is processed into agricultural compost. Compost can be decomposed quickly by microorganisms in the soil so that it is used more rapidly and is quickly exhausted. Biochar has received the attention of many experts. Using agricultural biomass waste directly is considered less efficient, does not last long and needs to be converted into biochar. Many uses of biochar in the soil, namely soil amelioration, because biochar has the function and ability to improve physically, chemically and biologically of degraded soils. The use of biochar for agriculture is still limited, especially by the farmers of Gampong Meunasah Intan, so technical guidance is needed on the manufacture of biochar and dissemination of research results on biochar. The phases of the activities carried out include (1) preparing the method of production biochar, feedstock materials, and necessary tools; (2) disseminating research results and showing several biochar products that can be used for domestic use; (3) providing technical guidance for the manufacture of biochar for farmers; (4) conduct demonstrations and field practice on how to make biochar and use various agricultural wastes as raw materials for making biochar. The results of this activity include: (1) the farmers of Gampong Meunasah Intan have gained knowledge about biochar and an understanding of how to produce biochar using the Kon-Tiki method and can apply the biochar to their agricultural land, and (2) the farmers of Gampong Meunasah Intan are very enthusiastic about participating in technical guidance and practising the method of biochar production and expect that this activity can continue with new knowledge about biochar.
